Watching this 1999 documentary over the weekend, I hadn’t laughed so hard in months. Filmed during the San Francisco Opera’s 1995 production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, “Squawk Faster” offers a rare examine into the complexities, banalities, and realities of making an operatic extravaganza. The narration includes running commentary by the stagehands, who passionately summarize the plots, comment on the action and crack jokes about the length of the fraction.

Meanwhile, as the indicate goes on upstairs, downstairs the technical crew are playing poker, or reading, or are engaged in any number of non-operatic pursuits while waiting for their cues. Wonderful camera-work often shows the production in burly swing, but from the point of opinion of those backstage and engaged in tense problem-solving, such as figuring out how distinguished fog to spend, or how to choreograph a fight with a dragon for maximum impact.

But the offhand comments running through the hour-long portion are probably the most toothsome. This is Wagner from the point of opinion of those who acquire the magic happen every night, but who remain virtually invisible while the present is going on. As hundreds of carpenters, electricians and others sweat to accomplish each scene arrive to life, they offer terse, laconic analyses of the status, plus an occasional bit of physical comedy.

The film ends with a romp through all four operas, filmed at hyper-speed, cleverly summing up the singing, conducting and visual effects in roughly two minutes. If anything, as the credits were rolling, I felt it was over too soon.

Like the Nibelungs in Wagner’s drama, the stagehands at the San Fran opera are mercilessly whipped by an rank troll (in this case, it’s some dumpy loudmouth with glasses) . Despite the lack of respect that they receive, the stagehands are absolutely valuable in bringing these masterpieces to the stage, and this ultra-cool film is a visual document of them in action.

The film has endearing footage of the stagehand’s fill interpretations of the drama, as well as slow the scenes looks at the performers. Watching the dragon from slack the curtain, as well as Brunnhilde doing some Spanish dancing to Wagnerian music are particularly frigid and amusing.

If you’re into Wagner, or enthusiastic in the world of theater, then this film is an absolute delight!

YO YO GIRL COP is the English language release title for SUKEBAN DEKA: CODENAME ASAMIYA SAKI, a 2006 Japanese movie based on the current “Sukeban Deka” series detailing the exploits of female special agents operating undercover in high school. The current film is something of a sequel to the 1985 TV series, insofar as the main character, Saki Asamiya, is presented as the daughter of the novel “Sukeban Deka” (delinquent girl cop), also codenamed Saki Asamiya, and played in this film by the TV actress who played the section in 1985, Yuki Saito.

What’s special about this film version is the casting of four Japanese female pop singers from Hello! Project in the main roles, all of whom do astonishing jobs. Solo artist Aya Matsuura, one of H!P’s greatest talents, plays Saki, while Rika Ishikawa, formerly of Morning Musume and novel lead singer of the trio, Biyuuden, plays Saki’s chief antagonist, Reika Akiyama. The two girls generally reveal adorably sweet and sunny dispositions in their J-pop day jobs and have appeared together in games, contests and fun bits over the years on Morning Musume’s TV display, “Hello Morning,” but are called on here to play unrelenting tough girls, complete with climactic yo-yo battle, and do so with utmost spirit and conviction. The supporting roles of Tae and Kotomi, two girls bullied by Reika and her gang, are filled by Rika’s sidekicks in Biyuuden, Yui Okada and Erika Miyoshi, both appearing in their very first film. They provide the film’s emotional core by playing wounded souls whose victimization brings to the fore the criminal position slack a website ominously named “Enola Satisfied” and designed to attract suicidal teens and promote a wave of suicide bombings. It’s Saki’s job to collect to the bottom of all this and she takes the two bullied girls under her cruise in a series of extremely touching scenes.

The heavy melodramatic tone (which matches that of the unusual TV series) may do off viewers expecting a more tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top style of anime-inspired Japanese action a la CUTIE HONEY, a live-action funny book superhero spectacle from 2004. This one is grand more somber and a bit boring in getting to the far-fetched fight scenes that a film like this needs. The final yo-yo battle between Aya and Rika, filmed on station in a sprawling abandoned factory in winter weather, is quite a look to study, but one wishes a Hong Kong action director with a more imaginative touch and greater experience with female fighters (paging Corey Yuen!), had been brought in for the action scenes.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Yo-Yo Girl Cop! Click Here

Still, if one feels sympathy for the basic set of a damaged soul like Saki pulling herself together to support a greater apt and redeem herself by smashing a cynical space to manipulate vulnerable teens, one can salvage this a reasonably challenging high school-themed thriller. And those who are already fans of Aya Matsuura and Rika Ishikawa can simply sit attend and marvel at this whole unique side of them.

One of the expansive attractions of this DVD is the inclusion of a special 41-minute feature, “Yo Yo Girl Mission,” which chronicles the making of the film and the process by which two endearing J-pop idols are transformed into karate-kicking terrible girls and mortal enemies. One can glimpse their normal “amiable” selves in conflict with the “menacing” behavior required of the characters, leading to frequent breakups into laughter during shooting, leading to a charming bit at a press conference where Aya cutely chides Rika for such laughter. And when the tiny and eager-to-please Aya insists on doing her occupy stunts and is seen getting rigged with cables for a wire-fu maneuver, it honest increases our high regard and admiration for her. She’s also seen in a dual interview alongside Yuki Saito, who plays her mother in the film, but shares no scenes with her. The two even compare their yo-yos.

Aya is heard on the soundtrack singing two songs with Miki Fujimoto, another ex-member of Morning Musume and Aya’s partner in the H!P duo, GAM.

Who can the police turn to when a website urge by an underground terrorist group that calls itself “Enola Glad” pops up bearing a skull and defective bones and a mysterious timer counting down to an unknown event? What about the teenage girl who unbiased got deported help to Japan and who’s mother is facing a trial where she is determined to be found guilty and sent to prison? Yeah, excellent call. Thus is born Asamiya Saki, the fourth rendition of the putrid Japanese crime fighter known as Yo-Yo Girl Cop. Played by pop star Aya Matsuura, this modern cop is a hardcore, battle-ready action hero.

The film is filled with explosions of action… literally and figuratively. As Asamiya Saki races against the clock to peek who the terrorists are and establish a discontinuance to their unfriendly notion, she constantly finds herself in situations where the only option is to fight her blueprint out. In disagreement, her unusual friend Taie Kono (delicately played by Yui Okada in her acting debut) is constantly running away and hiding from the many bullies that rule the private academy where Asamiya is working undercover. Reika, the worst of the bullies (played by Rika Ishikawa) is definite to obtain Asamiya Saki’s undercover region as difficult as possible. As more bombs hold turning up, and the terrorist situation begins to arrive distinct, Asamiya Saki readies herself for an intense showdown with the suspected head of the organization.

Yo-Yo Girl Cop is a fast-paced, beat-em-up, blow-em-up rocket shot of a movie. At times it almost feels like an anime arrive to life. Unfortunately, the cartoonish dialogue and residence tend to enjoy the movie befriend at times when it should be flying. When the film is heading bulky tilt towards the target, with time running out and action sequences shooting out one after the other, it’s the best sort of excellent girl vs. terrible girl laughable book action. Unfortunately, the action comes to a stop a miniature too often as the befriend memoir is slowly revealed through online chat room discussions and text messages that lead into voice-over.

Ultimately, the region begins to unravel and what seemed so memoir at the beginning starts to feel a runt more contrived and unimportant. The transition that Asimaya Saki makes from bumbling yo-yo tosser (hitting a wall and then knocking herself out in an early scene) to intense heroine sending her yo-yo flying and wearing what the featurette describes as a “bondage inspired battlesuit” seems too posthaste and unrealistic. Especially since the entire film takes station over a 72 hour period.

What adds a touch of class to the flm is that Yuki Saito, the fresh Asimaya Saki from the 1980’s Japanese television series, makes a spirited and effective cameo as Asimaya’s mother, the worn Asimaya Saki. Over twenty years after Saito immortalized the character on television, and three reincarnations later, she’s serve to abet usher the super-heroine into the 21st century.

For those who treasure japanimation and borderline-nonsensical plotlines challenging explosions, martial art fight scenes, and of course characters running unscathed through streams of machine-gun fire armed solely with a metal yo-yo, this is the film for you. For anyone else, it might be best to let this one pass by, for although this action feature, directed by Kenta Fukasaku (Battle Royale 2) has all the just intentions, it ends up pulling in a small short of the enact line.

I got to behold this film at a sneak preview. I got free tickets at an 80’s club I frequent. I only had a detached interest in seeing this film when I saw the trailers. In other words, this one was going to be one to wait for on dvd. Free is free, and I went with a tribe of folks on a Wednesday night.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Adventureland! Click Here

To my surprise, this was a really sweet, laughable, well-acted, and truly ample film. Yes, this is a film, not some flash-in-the-pan, cash in on the youth market, execrable out comedy. Determined, it has elements of that too, but they’re more subdued and the humor is less stout and more sublte. It’s basically about characters you already know or have met in your life. It takes plot in the 80’s and it’s basica set involves the dismay any 20-something would face during a recession, getting a really crappy summer job!

The dependable revelation I found with this film came in the execute of Kristen Stewart. She’s the steady deal. I had seen her in Twilight recently and found everything anyone did in that film to be hollow. Here, she really shows her acting chops playing a confused youth alarmed of the unknown. Jesse Eisenberg is the main character in the film, and I expected nothing but greatness from him, I previously saw him in the incandescent The Squid and the Whale. He is a very talented young actor who I query to eye a lot more from in the future.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Adventureland! Click Here

The film has all the details of a youth summer job that sucks pegged. Everything from the one hot-chick that everyone wants, the low-rent customers, the over-zealous and possibly dellusional bosses, and on-job romance. It’s all done with well-behaved emotion and situations. Nothing feels contrived or forced. Characters effect mistaks and things go deplorable, but there are no moments of the characters becoming overwrought and giving prefunctory speeches regarding the film’s main themes. This is really well written.

I must warn all the video game obsessed, vapid, youth drones about what they’re getting with this film. It has loyal characters, and a believable spot. It’s a hang-out report. You honest exhaust time getting to know a particular group of characters who section the same crappy theme park summer job. There is no contrived status devices, like switched or confused identities, no one is masquarading as one of the opposite sex, no space devices to maintain a erroneous account going, and no gags unbiased stuck in the film like an overlong action sequence to salvage yucks. Yes, the kids come by wasted and high, but it has more to do with them coping with their boredom, and it also helps lead to their bonding.

The film manages to be honestly touching as well, something I really didn’t question from this fraction. It was made by the same director of Tidy Dreadful, a really shining and comic youth comedy, but it is nothing like it. It’s not as tall, but its not going for the same thing. The humor comes from character and impartial situations and not from over-blown droll situations fair site up for the yucks.

If this film would’ve been advertised differently, I would’ve paid to discover it.

Recommended for a grand cast, original setting & memorable characters, and a well-written script, this movie will particularly appeal to those who grew up during the 1980s. But “Adventureland” is quiet timeless enough to please a broader audience.

Mismarketed as a wild comedy follow-up to “Superbad”, this small-scale mini-wonder is a perfect date film, but also a large dart through young adulthood.

The record is both poignant and funny, and the cast is uniformly pleasant throughout. Special acting honors go to Kristen Stewart, whose understated and tender performance was exceptionally enchanting to me (although she may be obviously contented, her straight-girl role is believable, and although I’d never heard of her before, I will be exploring every other film she’s in, simply on the basis of this role) . I can’t say enough about her performance here, and she’s going to be a major actress in years to reach.

Almost every label of the script rang upright to me until the final ten minutes, which were a venerable gratified Hollywood ending that probably wouldn’t have happened in real-life. But I can’t fault the coming-of-age record for needing such a denouement, even if it was largely wish-fulfillment. And so, for Greg Mottola’s script & direction, and for Kristen Stewart, five stars. A keeper.

This is my first Masters of Terror movie I watched due to such terrible reviews of almost every one of them. I read helpful things about this one (hi Chris and M!) so I decided to select it up. And boy am I ecstatic I did. If you want to sit aid and savor a favorable gore fest then I would definitely recommend this. Argento definitely does not believe succor with the grossness. I haven’t been happily goriefied in quite some time. And not only that… we are also blessed with a ton of nudity. So distinguished nudity that I actually kind of felt terrible about our main actress cause I deem she was topless for about 90% of her scenes. And then we have Meatloaf. You can never go scandalous when Man-Boob Bob is in your movie. He played his piece wonderfully in Pelts as a horny, sleazy, and uncaring fur coat maker looking for a tall paycheck.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Masters of Horror - Pelts! Click Here

Oh… the legend is about some raccoons with some guardian spirits in them. They die and fetch skinned. But their guardian spirits live on and pick up revenge. Sounds insensible I know, but the account isn’t THAT unpleasant. But, like porn, are you really watching this for the epic or are you watching this for something else!

Do you like the weak HBO series TALES FROM THE CRYPT? If so, PELTS may objective be tailor made for you. In this installment of the approved MASTERS OF Dismay series, director Dario Argento gives us PELTS, the anecdote of a fur trader named Jake Feldman (Meat Loaf Aday, who really needs to fall that last name, IMO) who stumbles upon the furs of several enchanted raccoons, and decides to develop the world’s most pleasing coonskin coat with them, in order to seduce Shana, the lesbian stripper of his dreams(A role filled out very nicely by Ellen Ewusie) . One exiguous problem: The furs, being once attached to enchanted-forest-dwelling raccoons, curse whomever they reach in contact with to die as the raccoons themselves did; bloody, repulsive, painful deaths.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Masters of Horror - Pelts! Click Here

So in no short order, the trapper who originally trapped the animals and killed them, his son, and several sweatshop workers are listless in stupendously over the top fashion, from gutting themselves, to diving face first onto a bearclaw trap (A colossal moment of giallo that is certain to please the gorehounds out there) to actually sewing their face shut. The only inquire left is whether or not Feldman can resist the siren song of the furs long enough to dump them and surive the nightmare he’s found himself in.

The position IS, as other reviews have stated, flat out ridiculous, but in PELTS’ defense, no more so than the average episode of TALES FROM THE CRYPT worn to be. In fact, if you threw in a Cryptkeeper intro and extro, this would be a slam bang episode of TFTC. The acting is solidly in the B-movie range, as you’d interrogate from a made for cable movie, and only Meat Loaf really stands out from the rest of the cast. The gore is plentiful enough to support the gorehounds satisfied, there’s plenty of bare breasts to sustain T & A fans gratified, and over all, apprehension fans in general should score enough in PELTS to suit their adore. A sizable entry into the MASTERS cannon, moral alongside Argento’s other entry, JENIFER. Recommended.

One of my all-time favorites. I personally consume it with the modern Japanese dialogue, but the english dub included on this DVD isn’t poor. Though I must say the English dub directed by Carl Maceck was better, if less literal. (Swiftly dodges all the Robotech-haters out there…) (Carl Maceck’s translation is NOT included on this DVD)

Lupin III is a master thief. With his cohorts Jigen and Goemon and the unwitting attend from his ex-girlfriend Fujiko as well as Lupin’s self-proclaimed nemesis, Inspector Zenigata, they free a beutiful Princess from her gross captor who is intent on marrying the young princess to engage the family fortune.

Like all of Miyazaki’s other works, this film has radiant animation that compliments a very intricate and heartful record.

Fans of the novel Lupin III comical by Monkey Punch may not devour it as remarkable since the characters act a slight ‘nicer’ than the fans may consume, but Miyazaki’s talent lies in weaving a agreeable legend together with magnificent animation, and it is clearly evidenced here.

This film stands not objective as a proper example of whats valid about Japanese animation, but as a salubrious movie in general… Inviting characters, clever region twists, unbelievable action, and a respectable dose of heart. I unexcited stand surprised that some hollywood shmuck hasn’t bought the rights to it and mangled it into the lame “blockbuster” live-action formula that America is currently plagued with. But I digress…

I can consider of no better introduction to anime than Hayao Miyazaki. Castle of Cagliostro is definitely one of his better works, and you will glean yourself amazed at how ‘real’ this hand-drawn animation feels compared to the generic pocket-monster-giant-robot-half-naked-girls-with-guns-otaku-fanboy-teenager-boobshow stuff… in fact I’d say that’s the only thing this film is missing. :) … again, I digress…

This work is a prick above and deserves a higher respect, as it’s done by a man who clearly has more respect for the art.

Making a movie of some guy fishing for three days arresting to an audience of high school kids is a daunting task. Hemingway’s “Frail Man” isn’t exactly corpulent of action, but kids liked reading the novella mainly because they identified with Santiago’s ruminations about life and not being defeated by it. This facet of the legend is wonderfully presented by Anthony Quinn in a masterful performance as Santiago.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Old Man and the Sea! Click Here

A nice touch to the yarn (and one that was lost on most of my students) was including Hemingway as a character in the movie: an unnamed newspaper writer on vacation with his wife and who wants to sing the yarn of Santiago’s struggle. Also some of the effects seem dated (The marlin leaping up in the air looked like it was projected late Anthony Quinn), and some students laughed at the production values of this 15 year conventional movie.

That said, most students actually enjoyed seeing the movie, and I mediate it was presented well and well acted. A obliging supplement to reading the novella in class.

Hemingway’s deceptively simple legend of an obsolete, out of luck Cuban fisherman’s encounter with a marlin is elusive prey for the cinema. Contrary to approved idea, the first film version with Spencer Tracy isn’t that hot, and has a gassy ponderousness and air of fakery about it. Anthony Quinn is more freshly apt and this exiguous film also has sizable discontinuance up marlin footage as a compensation. Overall it is not only more authentic, both as to the fish and as to the Cuban setting, but also lighter and brighter. Frankly Quinn beats Tracy by a country mile; he isn’t some white liberal worrying about portraying a Cubano with dignity, and gives you a well-rounded performance which admits the character’s faults and a obvious tendancy to be out of his head. That makes his quest believable and not simply incredible. Hemingway did actually bewitch this myth up out of proper life, but any writer knows that such fact is harder to handle than fiction.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Old Man and the Sea! Click Here

Alas, the film has a few other faults such as unpleasant (stale TV) film quality, plus a distracting subplot with a Hemingwayesque writer figure. Yeah, the shot of the outmoded man superimposed with the marlin is humorous, but at least has the excuse of being advance impossible to avoid. There is no excuse for turning a fat moon at sea into a giant searchlight pleasant of a prison camp. And then they avoid a enormous highlight of the book–the night scenes with the sharks!

The subplot is the main dilemma though. It doesn’t finally slay the memoir, but anyone who has read the novella knows how taut and carefully paced it is between the fisherman’s day and night battles, first with the marlin and then with the sharks that bask in it. Cutting from that to Mr. Writer and his shallow marital issues is at best minimally enthralling the first couple times (mainly because the duo is cast well, and nicely decked out in period costume) but eventually trite. Its a pity because this film, however rude budget, had so considerable going for it, yet its makers strangely didn’t trust Hemingway’s record enough. And this subplot, students should know, doesn’t track Hemingway biography either, nor any of his wives — the well dressed ditz that is the unnamed writer’s wife actually resembles Hemingway’s Key West (not Cuba) mistress Jane Mason, who he never paired up with in literary excursions. Nor does it track the Roger/Audrey subplot of Islands in the Stream (the egg out of which Stale Man was hatched) . Its unprejudiced too poor to have earnest people who view so capable but are such poor news, crowding out a handsome narrative.

Overall, however, the exertion is saved by Quinn’s reliable sense and an profitable supporting Cuban crew, rounding out the village and the extinct man’s family — only runt liberties on the novella. Quinn’s shrewdness and the director’s option toward lightness withhold the main spot from veering into this novella’s very bear shark infested waters–the misfortune of sentimentality at one kill, and too heavy metaphor at the other. Quinn’s handling of the feeble man’s monologues and dialogues keeps the project with at least one foot firmly place in the realm of realism. And he wonderfully looks the portion too, in every frame in which he appears.

Spike Jonze’s current movie, “Adaptation,” is a droll and moving witness at shy screenwriters, Hollywood hokum, and the lengths to which people will go to accumulate what they want.

Nicholas Cage is terrific in a dual role. He is Charlie Kaufman, a real-life screenwriter who has been commissioned to write the movie script for Susan Orlean’s acclaimed unusual, “The Orchid Thief.” Unfortunately, Charlie has a monumental case of writer’s block. He is also an disquieted, nerdy guy who has difficulty connecting with women and who is ashamed of his unkempt appearance. He is chunky and he wears a flannel shirt with the tails hanging out throughout powerful of the film. Cage also plays Charlie’s twin brother, Donald, who is confidently writing a screenplay of his have. Donald’s screenplay is formulaic and derivative, but he manages to sell it for a bundle. In addition, Donald has no pains getting a sparkling woman to be his girlfriend.

The conceit of “Adaptation” is that Charlie proceeds to write a screenplay about his inability to write a screenplay. There are hilarious vignettes with the extraordinary Meryl Streep, who plays the writer, Susan Orlean, as a repressed journalist who is glum because of a lack of passion in her life. Chris Cooper almost steals the movie as the eponymous orchid thief, a toothless, lowdown individual who somehow connects with Orlean.

Jonze and Kaufman are making several statements here. They are saying that Hollywood is a station where desperate people will do anything to succeed, include writing formulaic potboilers. The plot to survive is to adapt, to become whatever the public wants at the moment. You need to “find with the program” in order to succeed in Hollywood and in life.

“Adaptation” is also a movie about passion, about loving what you do, loving someone else, and loving life itself. You need to select risks, even if you wind up falling on your face, or else your life is meaningless.

“Adaptation” is confusing, exhilarating, beautifully acted, and one of the most bright films that I have seen in a long time. Peer it, and you will understand what all the fuss is about.

Nicolas Cage gives his edgiest performance in years, as Charlie Kaufman and twin brother Donald. Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper star as opposites-attract real-life characters, Susan Orlean (author of the Orchid Thief) and John LaRoche, horticulturist and the “orchid thief” himself. Brian Cox blusters brilliantly in a hilarious yet oddly touching ten diminutive supporting share as screenwriting guru Robert McKee. Adaptation is an adaptation of Orlean’s the Orchid Thief. But it is a record of the difficult task of writing that screenplay. It is intentionally and whole-heartedly an uncommon and difficult movie to sum up with ragged logic. What is sincere and what isn’t? What is based on life? What is based on the book? And finally is it all objective based simply on pure artistic chicanery?

Don’t be fooled by the movie’s alleged esoterism. Director Spike Jonze and real-life screenwriter Charlie Kaufman unruffled thought on telling a tale that has universal appeal. Orlean’s The Orchid Thief dealt with disappointment and people’s perception of success and failure. In thematic response, the area of Charlie Kaufman’s struggle to adapt the Orchid Thief, whilst being surrounded by his infinitely more successful brother, Donald, revolves around disappointment too. These themes resonate with the viewer. We grow to equally identify with Donald’s good-natured ignorance as protoganist Charlie’s paranoid neurosis. If one thinks outside the box (which is an absolute requirement for watching this movie) is is apparent that Charlie and Donald characterize different sides of the same person (the real-lifeKaufman) .

Charlie reminded me of the Adam Sandler character, Barry Egan in Paul Thomas Anderson’s vibrant and pleasing Punch-Drunk Appreciate. Both are too insecure of themselves to esteem. Both are intellectual and decidedly kooky, and topple in appreciate with exotic British women. Comparisons of the films as wholes have been made, but Punch-Drunk Treasure is decidedly more artsy and classical in sensibility…requiring patience to bask in its beauties. Adaptation for all its weirdness is more hooked on making the audience have a pleasurable time (but with brain and oddball sense of humor attached of course) .

An argument exists that this movie’s utterly outlandish and warped conclusion is a cop-out. Though i daren’t spoil the surprise of what happens, the conception that Jonze and Kaufman declare is one that requires deep consideration on the fraction of the film viewer. Is it a cop-out if there’s a reason slow the cop-out? Afterall, we only know what we gawk. Can a movie rely on implications and net away with it? These are questions Jonze and Kaufman invite the viewer to pore over. Adaptation is a thought-provoking but collected viscerally enchanting shot of pure cinema. Cherish it, then consider about it afterwards.

I saw ‘The Hunger’ when it was in the movie theatre in 1983. I didn’t know what to inquire of but David Bowie’s presence in the film made me go into the theatre.

Esthetics! Esthetics! Esthetics! Pleasing people, blooming region, fair music wrapped into the warm womb of blood sucking and immortality and escapism. The storyline doesn’t recede me, though every performance is stellar. I never earn any empathy for the characters, though I would like to sit down and have lunch with them (on the condition I’m not on the desert menu.)

This is the kind of film one might call a guilty pleasure. No social or luminous message or value, but imprints itself upon the emotional psyche. It provides a window into another side of one’s usual self. Do I have in vampires and the creature feature scifi world, no. But it can be fun.

The dvd quality is grand. Noteworthy better transfer than the video we’ve had all these years. Really jubilant it’s available and in our film library. Like this world where beauty and pointlessness meet for no other reason than to entertain you.

Horror movies are not usually lush, well-photographed or erotic. Yet this one is! David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, and the immortal Catherine Deneuve all sport trendy clothes and buckets of blood in this vampiric appreciate triangle. It is well-produced, and though it has been criticized for its “languid” slide — I assume it moves at unbiased the apt tempo for what the movie is…one long monotonous seduction. Grand is made of the lesbian sex scene, but it’s actually ravishing tastefully done and tame by today’s standards. It’s a nice reversal of the Dracula account — Catherine Deneuve as a bi-sexual immortal who choses her mates alternating sexes through the centuries. It’s a fun opinion! And who would say no to her anyway? It’s got more style than substance, but oh what a joy to gawk a movie that captures a sense of elegance and beauty and wrap it around a alarm epic! And the music is divine — from the underground gothic stylings of Bauhaus (Peter Murphy actually lip-synchs “Bela Lugosi’s Plain” over the opening credits) to the graceful duet from Delibes (the selection from LAKME it seems everyone mature after this movie) . It’s an fine movie, and one worth buying since it seems to be disappearing from rental shelves. And the sign is the lowest you will gain here at AMAZON as opposed to retail outlets!

Real slaughterhouse footage and scenes of dirty urban slums place the tone for this stark and obsessive Spanish dread flick. A slaughterhouse employee named Marcos gets attacked by a cabdriver who takes objection when he and his girlfriend are making out in the help seat, and Marcos kills him. This sets in motion a week of killing, first to cloak up the cabdriver’s death, and afterward to maintain the bodies piling up in his bedroom a secret. He tries to dispose of the body parts at the slaughterhouse, but he can’t do it snappily enough and soon the stench of the corpses is becoming a quandary, and Marcos slips further and further into madness. Uncommon, pseudo-sleazy film that works even though it doesn’t even attempt to live up to its title - there’s *no cannibalism*. The dubbing is exquisite awful and there’s not worthy gore (most of the nastiness happens off-screen), but there’s plenty of atmosphere and a sense of desperation builds in Marco’s apartment. The DVD looks ample except there is a petite “film flicker” in a few scenes - nothing terrible though. It’s not ample on splatter, but it’s quiet worth a contemplate for Eurohorror fans.

This one needs a newly restored digital release, but if you like a bit of slaughter house humor and screaming young women, go for this one. Eloy de la Iglesia does it a bit differently, and as usual, interestingly. Not for kids or the squeamish. Tremendous for Halloween parties. Secure it now and invite the neighbors over!
